Experience
Any great wine starts with great vineyards and great winemakers. That's what really differentiates all great wines from the rest of the pack. Mauricio Lorca is a truly special winemaker with a strong experience from several well-established Argentine wineries (Chief winemaker at Enrique Foster and formerly of Chilean-owned giant Finca La Celia, Catena, and Luigi Bosca).
Philosophy
He truly believes that Argentina is capable of producing wines among the world's greatest, and is shooting for nothing less. He believes that the fruit that comes from Mendoza is among the healthiest in the world, and therefore, there is no reason to mask it. Rather, he attempts to make wines that highlight the fruit and allow it to shine. His vineyards are among the most densely planted in the country, meaning that the vines compete with each other, producing healthier and fruitier grapes, and also that the vines give shade to their neighbors, protecting them from the potentially dangerous Mendozan sun. At the same time, he uses extremely low yields, which he says breaks his heart, because each year he has to discard so much good quality fruit to find only the very best. In the winery his painstaking care continues, he uses only the most modern technology (the winery is one of the only gravity flow wineries in Argentina), and constantly monitors every step of the process.
The wines
He chooses to use no oak on the Ópalo line, as a way to truly highlight the Argentine fruit he so passionately loves. The Poético line is aged 12 months in French oak barrels of one use.
It is apt that the winery is named after Mauricio, because this is his passion and his love, it is his project through and through, and he is what truly differentiates this winery from the rest. |
